Truth vs the Lies

Open Bible on a wooden table with dramatic morning light — Fortis Vera article on truth and cultural confusion

I spent years quoting a stat I never checked.

It was one of those numbers that gets passed around in men's ministry circles, the kind that sounds true because everyone repeats it with the same confident tone. I used it in a talk once, in front of a room full of guys, and afterward a man in the back row asked me where it actually came from. I did not have an answer. I had just believed it because it fit what I already wanted to say.

That is not a story about a bad statistic. That is a story about how easily a man will build on something he never tested.

Here is the uncomfortable part. Most of what shapes how you think about manhood, success, marriage, and even God did not arrive through careful examination. It arrived the way that stat did. Repeated with confidence, absorbed without a fight, filed away as fact.

Jesus prayed something very specific about this the night before he was crucified. In John 17:17 he asked the Father, "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." Not culture. Not consensus. Not whatever felt right in the room that night. The word.

What Sanctify Actually Means

Sanctify is not a word men use at the dinner table, so let's get concrete about it. It means to be set apart, shaped into something different than what surrounds you. Jesus was not praying that his disciples would feel spiritual. He was naming the actual mechanism that forms a man differently than the culture around him. Truth does that. Not vibes. Not a good worship set. The word, applied with some regularity, over time.

That distinction matters more now than it did when I started in ministry. Every man walking around today is being formed by something, every single day, whether he chooses it or not. An algorithm decides what he sees. A culture decides what counts as strength, what counts as success, what counts as a good man. Most of it slides in unexamined, the same way my bad stat did.

Paul warned Timothy about exactly this pattern. "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn away from the truth and turn to myths." That was written two thousand years before anyone had a phone, and it describes a phone feed with disturbing accuracy.

The Lie That Doesn't Announce Itself

Here is what I have noticed after nearly three decades of watching men drift. The lies that do the most damage rarely show up as obvious lies. Nobody hands you a business card that says Deception, Incorporated. The dangerous ones show up dressed as something reasonable. A definition of success that quietly excludes your family. A definition of strength that quietly excuses passivity. A definition of manhood borrowed from a movie rather than from Scripture.

You do not usually notice the moment you accepted one of these. You just notice, later, that something in your life does not match what you say you believe. That gap is where the lie was living the whole time.

Forged men do not get to have that gap. Not because they are perfect, but because a man who is actually being sanctified by the word keeps checking his life against something outside himself. He tests what he has absorbed instead of assuming it is safe just because everyone else believes it too.

Speaking It, Not Just Believing It

Ephesians 4 pushes this one step further than most men want to go. Paul writes that we should no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by every wind of teaching, but instead speaking the truth in love, growing up into maturity.

Speaking. Not silently agreeing in your own head while staying quiet everywhere else. A man who privately believes the truth but never says a word when it actually matters, at work, at home, in the group chat, has made a decision. It is not a neutral one. Silence in the face of a clear lie is still a position. It just happens to be a coward's position, dressed up as tolerance.

I am not talking about picking fights over every disagreement. That is its own kind of foolishness. I am talking about the moments that actually count, when your wife needs you to name what is true instead of keeping the peace, when your son needs you to say something clear instead of staying vague, when a friend is drifting and needs someone willing to say the hard thing out loud.

What Freedom Actually Costs

Jesus connected all of this to something men want badly and rarely find. In John 8 he said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Holding to it. Not agreeing with it from a comfortable distance. The freedom in that verse is not a feeling you stumble into. It is the result of actually living inside what is true, day after day, especially on the days it costs you something.

That is the whole difference between a man who has absorbed a hundred borrowed beliefs and a man who has tested what he believes against the word and kept only what survived. One of them is being shaped by whatever is loudest. The other is being sanctified by something that does not change with the culture.

Forge Challenge

This week, pick one belief you have never actually tested. Something about manhood, success, marriage, or God that you absorbed rather than examined. Take it to Scripture directly. Find the verse that confirms it or the verse that confronts it. Then do something with what you find. Say it out loud to one other man this week, even if it costs you something small to say it.

Truth was never meant to sit quietly in your head. It was meant to shape how you actually live.

Stop Drifting

You already know what happens if you do nothing.

A year from now,
you’ll either:

Be the same man.
Or a FORGED one.
